Kai Asakura and Cameron Smotherman will meet Saturday on the UFC Fight Night 277 main card at Galaxy Arena in Macau, China, in a bantamweight bout that gives both men a chance to reset their UFC runs. The fight is expected to send them to the cage at approximately 8:10 a.m. ET and will stream live on Paramount+.
That is why cameron smotherman is drawing attention now: he enters after winning his UFC debut in 2024, then losing two straight fights last year to Serhiy Sidey and Ricky Simon. Asakura arrives with the more glaring skid on paper, but also with the sharper name value, and FanDuel listed him as a -275 favorite against Smotherman at +225.
Asakura, a former Rizin FF champion, is 21-6 in MMA and 0-2 in the UFC. His promotional start has been rough. He lost his debut title fight to Alexandre Pantoja by rear-naked choke submission, then was submitted by Tim Elliott last August. Smotherman is 12-6 overall and 1-2 in the UFC, and the bout pits two fighters who have both had promising starts checked by recent losses.
That recent form is where the matchup turns. MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom sees Smotherman’s boxing style feeding into Asakura’s power, and he backed Asakura to end the fight by knockout before the opening minute of Round 2. It is a warning that the striker-versus-striker look on paper may not stay clean for long, especially if Asakura can keep the bout standing long enough to punish entries.
The unanswered question is whether Smotherman can make the fight messy enough to break that read. If he cannot, Asakura has a chance to leave Macau with his first UFC win and put his own run back on track at bantamweight. If he does, Saturday morning’s fight could become the kind of result that reshapes the rest of the division’s lower half before the card has even fully settled in.
