Anthony Gordon has completed a move to Barcelona, with the La Liga champions signing the forward from Newcastle United for a significant undisclosed fee. The transfer brings an end to his three-and-a-half years at St James' Park and gives Barcelona a player who left Newcastle as one of their most productive attackers.
Gordon made 152 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions and scored 39 goals, finishing his final season as the club's top scorer with 17, including 10 in Europe. He also played every game in Newcastle's run to the 2025 Carabao Cup final and scored in both legs of the semi-final win over Arsenal, key contributions in the campaign that ended the club's 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.
He arrived from Everton in January 2023 and quickly became central to Eddie Howe's side, helping Newcastle qualify for the UEFA Champions League in his debut season before adding 11 goals in 35 Premier League appearances the following campaign. His progress was reflected away from club football as well: he earned an England call-up for the March friendlies, made his debut at Wembley against Brazil, and represented England at Euro 2024 after being named Player of the Tournament at the 2023 European Under-21 Championships.
Newcastle said it was disappointed to lose Gordon but understood that Barcelona represented a big opportunity for him. Ross Wilson said there had been interest from a number of Europe's leading clubs over a period of time, a reminder that his departure was not sudden, even if the destination still carries the force of a step up. The move follows a spell in which Gordon was not only one of Newcastle's leading scorers but also a player whose profile had grown well beyond the club.
Gordon said Newcastle gave him a sense of belonging and identity when he arrived feeling lost in life and in football, and he said he wanted to leave in a good way after loving every minute of his time there. That is the part of the transfer that will stay with Newcastle now: he leaves with the club's best wishes, while Barcelona get a player who has already proved he can deliver on a big stage.
