Gunner Olszewski was carted off the field during a Giants OTA practice on Friday after going down with a non-contact injury during a drill. The workout stopped while he was attended to on the field, and the team had no immediate word on his condition.
The injury matters because Olszewski has been the Giants' lead punt returner when healthy, a role that could become a question if this proves to be serious. He also re-signed with the team this offseason after spending the last three seasons in New York.
Olszewski's role has been limited on offense, but he still gave the Giants useful snaps last season with 10 catches for 145 yards and a touchdown. That made his value on special teams even more important, especially for a club that already lost defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris to an Achilles tear earlier this month.
For now, the most important detail is the one the Giants have not provided: a diagnosis. Any decision about who handles punts next would have to wait until the team knows more, and another player would need to step into the job if Olszewski is sidelined for any meaningful stretch.
