Tonbridge have signed Millwall striker Frankie Baker on a permanent deal, bringing the 20-year-old back to Longmead after a loan spell that produced six goals in 24 appearances last season. Baker has joined as the club’s second summer signing, following goalkeeper Nathan Harness, who arrived on Wednesday.
The move ends Baker’s 11-year association with Millwall, the club he joined aged nine and progressed through before emerging in a youth side that reached the FA Youth Cup semi-finals two years ago. Last season’s loan showed enough for Tonbridge to make the switch permanent, and manager Alan Dunne said Baker was the club’s only choice and wanted to stay because he had enjoyed his time there and believed the club was right for him. Dunne added that he was delighted to keep a young, hungry player who wants to learn, improve and has the attributes to reach the top level.
Baker said he was very excited to sign for Angels and start the next chapter of his career. He said he was grateful for the chance to join such a hardworking team and ready to give his absolute all on the pitch to help the club. He also said he could not wait to play in front of the fans again and score goals.
Tonbridge were in National League South last season, and Baker’s return gives them a forward who already knows the club, the ground and the demands of the level. The transfer also draws a clean line under a long spell at Millwall, where Baker spent his entire development years before making the move in search of regular senior football.
For Tonbridge, the signing is more than a reunion. It is a statement that they want players who can contribute now and still get better. For Baker, it is a fresh start after an 11-year association with one club, and the chance to turn a promising loan into the permanent move he wanted.
