Activision has confirmed that the PS4 version of Call Of Duty Warzone will be taken offline and rendered unplayable once the first season of support for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 goes live. The standalone Warzone mode will be delisted from the PS Store on 4th June 2026, and the in-game store on PS4 will be disabled on 25th June 2026.
The base game launches on 23rd October 2026, and Season 1 usually follows a few weeks later. When that happens, the PS4 version of Warzone will be shut down so it can properly support Modern Warfare 4, which will not have a PS4 version at all.
That makes Modern Warfare 4 the first entry in the franchise to be available only on current-gen consoles. Activision has tied the PS4 cutoff directly to the new game’s support cycle, meaning Warzone on older hardware is being cleared out before the new season arrives rather than left to run alongside it. The company has said purchases made on PS4 are tied to the player’s Activision Account, and those items will carry over if the player upgrades to a PS5 to keep playing Warzone.
The decision has already drawn a sharp reaction from players. Liam said: “This is an insane decision.” He added: “Warzone plays perfectly well on the ps4 and the amount of people still playing on their ps4's must be bloody fuming and rightly so.”
His frustration speaks to the wider tension in Activision’s annual release cycle. The studio releases new content for both the latest game and Warzone in tandem, but supporting dated hardware can strain the kind of content it can produce. On paper, the move is about making room for Modern Warfare 4. For PS4 players, it means a hard stop: the game they bought and kept alive on older hardware will disappear before the new season is even underway.
Liam also said: “I played warzone to death on my ps4 and when I got my ps5 and installed warzone it looked a bit better and ran smoother but it wasn't a massive upgrade.” He finished with: “Really I wonder what they are thinking of sometimes.” The answer, at least from Activision’s side, is clear enough now. Warzone is leaving PS4 so Modern Warfare 4 can move forward on current-gen machines, and the cutoff dates are already set.
