Adam Azim returns to action on Saturday night in London with the kind of opponent who should tell a lot about where he stands. The unbeaten 22-year-old headlines a BOXXER card at the OVO Arena and will look for a sixth straight knockout when he meets Steve Claggett, with the fight shown live on BBC2.
Azim goes into Saturday, May 30, with a perfect record through 14 professional bouts and a world ranking of No. 7 with both the IBF and the WBO. That has turned this into more than just another showcase. It is being sold as a step toward world-title contention, and Claggett is the man expected to put that idea under pressure.
Claggett arrives with 50 professional fights behind him and the sort of stubbornness that has already carried him through a major test at the top level. Two years ago, he went the distance with Teofimo Lopez when he challenged for the WBO world title, a result that still carries weight in a matchup built on whether Azim can make another clean jump in class.
Camille Estephan, speaking ahead of the bout, said Claggett is the measuring stick that will show whether Azim is for real and whether he is ready at the highest level. He also pointed to Claggett’s energy and gas tank as the traits that could really test Azim, adding that he expects an amazing fight.
That is the friction at the center of the card. Azim has been doing what rising prospects are supposed to do, winning and finishing fights, while Claggett has been the kind of durable, experienced opponent who forces a young fighter to answer questions over a longer night. A knockout would extend the run and sharpen the hype. Anything less would not erase Azim’s momentum, but it would make the road toward a title shot look a little less straight.
The undercard also carries a title bout of its own, with Joel Kodua and Will Harrison set to compete for the English welterweight title. For Azim, though, the spotlight stays fixed on one question: whether Saturday night ends with another stoppage and a stronger case that he belongs in the conversation with the division’s established names.
