Family members on Wednesday identified the tow truck driver killed in Jacksonville as Oliver Lopez, the owner of Oliver Towing, who died after being shot late Tuesday night while trying to repossess a vehicle at the Sanctuary Walk apartment complex.
Police said Lopez was at the complex around 10 p.m. Tuesday, on East 21st Street a few blocks east of Phoenix Avenue, when an argument broke out with the vehicle’s owner. Officers said a man then came outside and fired multiple shots, striking Lopez. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.
The shooting happened during a repossession attempt in a city neighborhood where such work can turn tense in seconds. Investigators said the suspected shooter has not been arrested, and they have not released a description of the suspect or said whether the man was connected to the repossession dispute.
Lopez had owned Oliver Towing for more than two years, according to family. His cousin described him as “a very hard-working guy and a great friend, a great brother and a loving father.” A friend who also drives a tow truck said the loss of a fellow repossession agent reaches far beyond the industry, calling it a tragedy that extends well outside the job itself.
Police are asking anyone with information to call 866-845-TIPS or 630-0500. For Lopez’s family, the unanswered questions are now tied to a name and a loss that arrived in the span of one night: who the shooter was, and why a repossession call ended with a man dead at the hospital.
