Virginia Athletics said on May 18 that Lars Tiffany will not return as head coach of the men’s lacrosse program, ending a 10-season run that included two national championships and a 108-51 record.
The school said a national search will begin immediately. Tiffany, who led Virginia to titles in 2019 and 2021, leaves behind one of the program’s most successful stretches and a standard built on winning in the sport’s biggest moments.
Tiffany had served as Virginia’s men’s lacrosse head coach for 10 seasons, and the two championships were central to the announcement the school made on May 18. Those titles, won in 2019 and again in 2021, remain the clearest measure of what his tenure produced.
What comes next is now the most immediate question for Virginia lacrosse: whether the next coach can match the level Tiffany set in a program that has already shown it can reach the top. The school has said only that the search starts now, which means the rebuilding of the sideline begins before the season’s next chapter does.
