Highfield House has postponed its charity dog show after warning that swindon weather conditions were expected to make the event unsafe in the heat. The show had been due to run from 11am to 1pm on Sunday May 25 at the care home on London Road in Halesworth.
The event was set to raise funds for Norfolk Greyhound Rescue, but organisers said they pulled it because of the extreme weather they were expecting. Their decision came before the bank holiday weekend brought the hottest spell of the season so far to the East of England.
The Met Office forecast a stretch of hot, sunny weather across the region, with temperatures expected to be widely into the high 20s and potentially climb above 30C in some places as the holiday progressed. An amber heat health alert was also in place for the East, underscoring the risk to people and animals alike.
For a charity dog show, the warning left little room for compromise. A midday event on a warm bank holiday weekend can turn quickly from a family outing into a welfare concern, especially when dogs are expected to spend time outdoors in direct sun. Highfield House did not try to push ahead with a reduced programme or a later start. It postponed the show outright.
Organisers said the event would return later in the summer, with a new Saturday date still to be confirmed. That leaves the fundraising effort intact, but delayed, and it reflects a wider reality across the East: when the heat health alert is amber and temperatures are heading toward 30C, even small community events are being forced to change plans.
The postponement is a practical call rather than a symbolic one. Highfield House had a clear window for the dog show, a clear cause to support and a clear reason to act before the weekend heat arrived. The open question now is simply when the rescheduled Saturday date will be announced.
