Derry City will welcome Shelbourne to the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium on Monday with both sides arriving under very different kinds of pressure. Derry are chasing their first win in six games, while Shelbourne are eyeing a third consecutive victory after stringing together their best run of 2026.
The home side come into the derry city vs shelbourne meeting sixth in the Premier Division on 21 points, 10 short of the top three and only two above Sligo Rovers in the relegation playoff spot. That makes the margin for error thin at the Brandywell, where Derry have won only one of their last five home games. They drew 2-2 with Waterford last week and then 0-0 with St Patrick's Athletic most recently, extending a run of five matches without a win. A 1-0 defeat to Drogheda United on May 8 sits inside that spell, though Derry did beat Shamrock Rovers 1-0 on April 24 and they also beat Shelbourne 2-1 at Tolka Park last month after losing 2-1 to Shels on March 13.
That history gives the fixture a sharper edge than the table alone might suggest. Derry finished runners-up in 2025, but this season has been much less comfortable as they try to keep clear of the lower reaches of the division. Shelbourne, who finished third in 2025, are fifth and seven points behind third-placed Bohemians, leaving them firmly in the chase for a higher finish if they can keep their momentum going.
Shels arrived in better shape after beating St Patrick's Athletic 1-0 on Friday and Waterford 2-1, with Sean Boyd scoring a stoppage-time winner against Waterford to seal back-to-back wins for the first time in 2026. Their unbeaten run now stands at five matches and began with a 2-1 win over Dundalk. Away from home, they have lost just once this season and have won five of their last seven matches on the road, a record that will test Derry's ability to turn Brandywell into an advantage.
Derry's defensive options are also under strain. Brian Maher has been sidelined since February, Robert Slevin is out with a knock and Jamie Stott missed the most recent match after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against St Patrick's Athletic. Tiernan Lynch could turn to a backline featuring Conor Barr, Patrick McClean and Cameron Dummigan in front of Eddie Beach, a setup that will need to stand firm against a Shelbourne side carrying more confidence and more goals in reserve. For Derry, Monday is about stopping the slide. For Shelbourne, it is another chance to keep climbing.
