Pat McAfee said on May 25 that his wife, Samantha, had given birth to their son after an emergency C-section prompted by a high-risk pregnancy and severe preeclampsia. The baby, Midas Robert McAfee, entered the world on May 22 at 10:42 p.m., weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces.
McAfee said the birth came after doctors moved quickly on Friday night, with Samantha recovering from surgery as the newborn took his first steps outside the womb. He said the couple’s daughter, Mackenzie, was part of the family’s welcome for the new arrival.
The details carried the kind of weight that turns a personal announcement into a medical update. McAfee said Midas was born at 36 weeks, short of the 40 weeks considered full term, and needed help adjusting after delivery. He said the baby was sent to the NICU, where doctors put him on CPAP, fed him through a tube and kept him in a heated pod under a heating lamp to help him transition from the womb to the world.
That made the announcement more than a celebration. It was also a snapshot of a difficult delivery that ended safely, with mother and son separated for part of the first day of life while Samantha recovered. McAfee said he could do little beyond moving between the two, bringing what he called positive energy while the baby worked through those first hours.
The question now is not whether the family has news to share. It is how quickly Midas strengthens after an early arrival, and how long the newborn will need NICU support before he can head home with Samantha, McAfee and Mackenzie.
