Rain was set to wipe out Memorial Day parades across Connecticut on Monday, forcing towns from Ansonia to Glastonbury to cancel outdoor events or move them indoors. In several places, ceremonies for fallen service members stayed on the schedule even as the marching events were called off.

Ansonia rescheduled its parade for May 31 at 2 p.m., while Avon canceled its parade but planned an 11 a.m. ceremony at the Senior Center. Bloomfield also canceled its parade and set a noon ceremony in the Great Room at the Alvin & Beatrice Wood Human Services Center. said the was canceled, though the in Forestville Centers was still scheduled to take place.

Other towns were still making decisions as the weather shifted. Ellington said the fate of its parade would be decided Monday morning. Danbury’s mayor canceled that parade, while Dayville and East Hampton also called off theirs. East Hampton moved its observance to a 9:00 a.m. ceremony in the high school auditorium, and East Hartford shifted its program indoors at 10 a.m. at town hall. East Windsor’s parade was called off as well, with a 10 a.m. ceremony set for Warehouses Point Station 1 on Bridge Street.

Essex town officials canceled their parade but said ceremonies were ready at 9:30 a.m. at the Essex Veterans Memorial Hall. Farmington canceled its parade because of the weather and invited veterans to gather at the Town Hall Veterans Memorial at noon for a short ceremony. Glastonbury’s said its parade was canceled, but a ceremonial service was planned for 9:30 a.m. at the Glastonbury High School gym at 330 Hubbard Street.

The cancellations showed how quickly Memorial Day plans were reshaped by the forecast. Towns that kept the day’s observances intact largely shifted to indoor programs, making the commemorations less visible but no less deliberate.
