Millions of people in the United States will mark Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, 2026, pausing for a federal holiday that honors the men and women of the armed forces who died while serving the country. For many, the day opens a long weekend. For the nation, día de los caídos 2026 remains a date of remembrance first.

The holiday was first known as Decoration Day, and its formal beginning came in 1868, just three years after the Civil War ended in 1865 with close to 620,000 soldiers dead. Union veterans called for a national day to decorate graves with flowers and flags, and Gen. John A. Logan declared May 30, 1868, the official day of national tribute. That same year, about 5,000 people decorated the graves of more than 20,000 soldiers at Arlington, in a ceremony led by then-Congressman and former general James A. Garfield.

What began as a gesture tied to Civil War loss broadened after World War I, when Memorial Day came to honor military dead from all American wars. In 1971, Congress made the observance an official federal holiday under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, fixing it on the last Monday in May.

The shift left Memorial Day with a dual identity that still shapes it now. It is a solemn date for families, veterans and communities paying tribute to the fallen, but it is also the weekend many Americans use for travel, gatherings and the unofficial start of summer. That split helps explain why ceremonies continue to carry weight at the same time the holiday fills highways, parks and backyards.

Each year, cities including New York, Chicago and Washington hold parades, ceremonies and vigils, while volunteers at Arlington National Cemetery place small U.S. flags on the graves of soldiers. Veterans Day, by contrast, falls on November 11 and recognizes all veterans, especially those who are still living. Memorial Day is different. It is for the dead, and that distinction is the point of the day.
