Max Dowman was named in Arsenal's starting line-up for the match at Crystal Palace on Sunday and became the youngest player to start a Premier League match. The 16-year-old was 16 years and 144 days old when he set the record at Selhurst Park.
That moved him past Jose Baxter, who had held the mark since 2008 after starting for Everton at 16 years and 198 days. Dowman was also part of the Arsenal side that received a guard of honour on Sunday, another sign of how far the club's season had already gone before kickoff.
The teenager's rise has been unusually quick. He made his Premier League debut in August 2025 at 15 years and 235 days old, becoming the youngest player in the competition. In November 2025, he became the Champions League's youngest player at 15 years and 308 days old, then in March he became Arsenal's youngest scorer when he netted against Everton at 16 years and 73 days.
Arsenal had already clinched the title before the trip to Palace, so Dowman's first start came with the trophy secured and the pressure of the chase gone. That also matters for the medal count: players who make at least five league appearances qualify for a medal, and Dowman had already played five times in the top flight before this start.
For Arsenal, the record is another marker of a season in which a teenager has moved from curiosity to fixture. For Dowman, it is the next step in a year that has already carried him from debutant to scorer to starter in major competitions.

The next question is not whether Dowman belongs in the conversation. It is how quickly Arsenal keep trusting a player who has already rewritten their record book before turning 17.
