The shows will be staged for cinematic viewing and broadcast live into AMC locations nationwide throughout the month, with audiences in theaters sending reactions back to the performers in real time. The companies say the idea is to let fans and artists interact during the show, turning the theater into part concert venue and part live feedback loop.

The first wave of acts gives the project a pop-heavy start, with Rexha, Hilton, Petras and Morris among the performers lined up for the June rollout. AMC is not alone in trying to turn cinemas into places for more than films. In recent years, theaters have tested concert films, sporting events, anime premieres and live Olympic coverage as operators look for ways to bring people back through the doors.

That search has already produced one clear proof point.
