Hollie Doyle is facing a spell on the sidelines after a fall at Bath on Friday evening, the latest setback for one of British racing’s busiest riders. Doyle was aboard Vault Of Heaven in the 5½f handicap when the four-year-old appeared to sustain a serious injury, ending the race in distress for horse and rider alike.
The 29-year-old had already been in the winner’s enclosure earlier on the Bath card, partnering Flight Signal to victory for Wathnan Racing and Archie Watson. That win was followed by a far more troubling scene later in the evening, when Doyle came down in the race on Vault Of Heaven for Kevin Frost and was left waiting to find out the extent of her own injury as well as the condition of the horse.
On Saturday, Doyle confirmed on Instagram that she will be out for a while. “Thank you for all the messages, unfortunately I will be on the sidelines for a while after sustaining an injury at Bath yesterday. Thoughts are with connections. I’ll be back!” she wrote. It was a brief message, but it carried the weight of a rider who had been forced to stop at a point in the season when she had been building steady momentum.
Doyle has ridden 53 winners this year and had been due to travel to Salisbury on Saturday evening with a full book of rides. That plan was wiped out by the fall at Bath, turning what had started as a productive evening into an enforced break from the saddle. She had also ridden Your Song for Robson Aguiar at Naas last Sunday, underlining how active she had been across the week before the crash.
The fall matters because Doyle is not a rider who can be easily replaced in a racecard; when she is sidelined, books are reshuffled and yards lose a trusted name in the saddle. It also leaves open the key question that now hangs over the incident at Bath: how long she will be out, and how serious the injury proves to be after a night that was already marred by the apparent injury to Vault Of Heaven.
