Barcelona and Lyon met in a Women's Champions League final for a record-equalling fourth time on Saturday, with Barcelona chasing a fourth title and Lyon trying to halt another run from the Spanish side that has changed the balance at the top of Europe. Barcelona were in their sixth consecutive final, while Lyon were back in their 12th after beating Arsenal in the semi-final.
The matchup carried the weight of two dynasties. Lyon arrived as eight-time European champions and the most decorated side in European women’s club football, but they had not won the competition since 2022. Barcelona, meanwhile, had beaten Lyon 2-0 in the 2023-24 final in Bilbao and had ended their long stretch of dominance by lifting the trophy again and again in recent seasons.
For Lyon defender Ellie Carpenter, the final brought back memories of the club’s most successful years. She had been part of the Lyon side that won the Women's Champions League in 2019-20 and again in 2021-22, years that included Lyon’s run of five Champions League titles in a row between 2016 and 2020. That history framed the rematch: one club trying to protect its legacy, the other trying to deepen its own.
Barcelona’s build-up was also shaped by talk around Alexia Putellas, whose future has become part of the noise around the club. Jana Fernandez said she would love to see Putellas move to the WSL, while Rut Vilar said it would likely be the last final of Putellas wearing the Barcelona jersey. Vilar said there was “a lot of excitement but also emotions too,” adding that it would likely be the last final of Putellas in a Barcelona shirt and that “it’s a big final and it also this makes it even more emotional for us.” She also said: “I’m not sure she knows what she wants to do, I think there is a 70% chance that she leaves.”
That uncertainty matters because Putellas is still one of the defining figures of Barcelona’s era, and her presence has helped drive the club into a sixth straight final. Vicky Lopez was also part of the picture, named as a 19-year-old Barcelona player on the bench in the 2022-23 campaign when the club won the Champions League. Barcelona have become the team that ended Lyon’s recent hold on the competition, but Lyon’s record of reaching another final showed they remain part of the same small circle at the top.
The next question is less about whether either club belongs on this stage than about how much longer Barcelona can keep turning the rivalry in their favour if this really is one of Putellas’ last nights in the shirt. Lyon have the history, Barcelona have the recent edge, and the final again put the two sides in the same place for one decisive meeting.
