data scientists have put numbers on sneaker obsession, compiling a list of the most expensive Air Jordan sneakers ever sold on the resale platform. At the top of that list sits a pair of Air Jordan 1 OG "Black and Red" sneakers in size 10.5 that sold for $27,027, while another pair in size 11.5 brought $16,931.

The same ranking shows how far rare Jordan releases can travel beyond their original store price. The Air Jordan 1 OG "Black and Red" colorway from 1985 dropped for $65 in adult sizes on September 15, 1985, and later posted an average premium of 41,480% on StockX. The Air Jordan 4 "Wahlburgers" and the Air Jordan 4 x Travis Scott Purple (Friends and Family) both reached $26,000 for a size 9 pair after launching at $210 in adult sizes on January 1, 2018, and February 9, 2019, respectively.

The "Wahlburgers" pair carried an average price premium of 12,281%, a reminder of how a limited run can turn into a collector target. It was also the only "Wahlburgers" pair inside the top 20. The Travis Scott Purple (Friends and Family) colorway appeared more than once on the list, ranking 6th, 8th and 9th as well, with those extra transactions ranging from $23,000 to $25,940.

The numbers fit a pattern that has defined the Air Jordan line for decades. The shoes captured the imagination of sneakerheads in the 1980s and 1990s before moving beyond the sport after Michael Jordan's retirement in 2003, and and have long balanced exclusivity and supply to keep demand high. This list is a snapshot of that strategy working exactly as intended: the scarcer the pair, the harder the chase, and the higher the resale.

For collectors, the lesson is plain. The original retail price is only the starting point. On StockX, history, rarity and size can push the same silhouette into a market where a $65 sneaker becomes a $27,027 trophy and a $210 release can clear $26,000 without much effort.
