Daniel Leonard, the son of Sugar Ray Leonard, was taken into police custody early Wednesday morning in Los Angeles after officers responded to a restraining order call at a private residence in West Los Angeles.
A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson said that on May 20, 2026, around 5:29 a.m., officers assigned to the West Los Angeles Area were sent to the 1500 block of Amalfi Drive for a report of a restraining order violation. The spokesperson said officers arrived and took the suspect into custody for being in violation of his restraining order. Daniel Leonard was arrested shortly before 5:30 a.m. on suspicion of violating a restraining order.
TMZ reported that the 25-year-old tried to enter his father's home by turning exterior door handles, and that responding officers found him near the property's pool house. Court records in Los Angeles County indicated that Sugar Ray Leonard recently requested a restraining order against his son, though authorities have not confirmed whether that order was directly tied to Wednesday's arrest. A hearing is scheduled for June 15.
The arrest brings a difficult public turn to a relationship that has repeatedly appeared cordial in recent years. In November 2023, Sugar Ray Leonard posted a birthday message about Daniel on social media, writing, “So happy to be with my son Daniel this weekend!” and “I am so proud of you!!! Happy Birthday!!!” The two also attended the 2024 CHLA Gala at the L.A. Live Event Deck in Los Angeles on Oct. 5, 2024, a reminder that the father and son had often appeared together at public events.
Sugar Ray Leonard has four children — Daniel, Camille, Ray Charles Jr. and Jarrel — with his ex-wife, Juanita, and he also has a grandson, Devin Leonard. The arrest now leaves a private family dispute in the open, with the next court date set for June 15 and the key question centered on how far the conflict has advanced since the restraining order request was filed.
