Tesco has started trials of a major upgrade to its meal deal lineup, bringing hot breakfast and lunch items into 39 stores across the UK for a limited time. Customers with a Clubcard will be able to buy the new hot breakfast and lunch options for £5.50.
The trial stretches Tesco’s familiar meal deal model beyond the chilled sandwiches and wraps that many shoppers know best. Sausage rolls, croissants and paninis are among the items joining the lineup, and customers will be able to pair them with sides such as fruit pots and drinks including chilled coffees, smoothies and juices.
The move is not just about adding a few new products. Tesco is also introducing a fresh range of chilled breakfast-to-go items in large stores, aimed at busy mornings when shoppers want something quick, convenient and flavour-packed. Among the new products are a Tesco Butter Beans & Chorizo Egg Pot, Tesco Banoffee Overnight Oats and Tesco Strawberry Compote with Granola and Greek Style Yoghurt.
That broader push shows Tesco is widening the meal deal beyond its standard chilled format, using the trial to test whether shoppers will buy hot breakfast and lunch choices as part of the same value offer. The limited run in 39 stores will give the supermarket a first read on whether customers want the flexibility to mix hot and chilled items at the same price point.
For now, the answer is in the stores themselves. If the trial works, Tesco will have a clearer path to making breakfast meal deals a bigger part of the day, not just a lunchtime add-on.
