Nick Pope then denied Valentin Castellanos with a volley save and used his legs to stop El Hadji Malick Diouf on the follow-up, before substitute Taty Castellanos gave West Ham some hope with a superb volley from distance.
That goal never changed the direction of the match. Newcastle, who moved up to 11th after the win, controlled the rest of the afternoon while West Ham were left counting on results elsewhere. Their inferior goal difference means Tuesday matters even more than the table suggests, because if Chelsea do not beat Tottenham, West Ham will head into the final day with survival still out of their hands.
The tension around the club is now as much about the schedule as the standings. West Ham's relegation rivals Tottenham Hotspur were due to play Chelsea on Tuesday night, and the outcome will decide whether Sunday's loss becomes a setback or the beginning of the end.
