Charles Spencer, 61, married his girlfriend Cat Jarman in a private ceremony in Arizona on Friday, ending a two-year relationship that grew out of work, friendship and a podcast partnership. Jarman, 43, is a Norwegian archaeologist, and the pair said in a joint statement on Tuesday that they felt “incredibly lucky” to have moved from colleagues to friendship to deep love and connection.
The wedding marked Spencer’s fourth marriage. Jarman wore a white linen dress and heeled shoes and carried a bouquet of white roses. The couple have worked together on archaeological digs and, since 2023, have co-hosted The Rabbit Hole Detective with Richard Coles. They celebrated the show’s 100th episode in February.
Spencer’s new marriage comes after a prolonged period of change in his personal life. He split from Karen Spencer in June 2024 and their divorce was finalized two months before this article. The former couple married in 2011 and share one child, Lady Charlotte. Spencer was previously married to Victoria Aitken from 1989 to 1997, and they share four children, and he was later married to Caroline Freud for six years, with whom he has two children.
The connection between Spencer and Jarman first turned professional when he was asked to review her 2021 book River Kings. Jarman was previously married to Tom Jarman and is the mother of two sons. Spencer’s name also carries a wider public history as the brother of Princess Diana, who married the then-Prince Charles in July 1981.
What happens next is straightforward: Spencer and Jarman begin their marriage while continuing to appear together in public life around their shared projects. The detail that matters today is that this is not a brief tabloid flirtation but a relationship built over years, and it now ends in marriage after the collapse of Spencer’s previous one was completed only recently.
