The Detroit Pistons were added Sunday to the list of teams that could pursue Kawhi Leonard this summer, a reminder that the 34-year-old forward’s future remains unsettled even as the playoffs move on without him. The Clippers have not offered any update on extension talks, and there has been no new development in the league’s Aspiration investigation that would change Leonard’s position with the team.
Detroit’s interest matters because the Pistons just came off a Game 7 home loss to the Cavaliers and are facing a summer of hard choices. They also have draft capital, assets and cap flexibility, plus intriguing young players, useful rotation pieces and all of their own draft picks, which gives them the kind of package teams consider when they want to make a major swing.
That is why Leonard has been pulled into the Pistons conversation at all. The Clippers, if they ever chose to move him, could come away with two first-round picks and a prospect such as Ron Holland, while Duncan Robinson and Isaiah Stewart would be part of the matching salary in the proposal. Robinson would address Los Angeles’ lack of shooting, and Stewart could give the Clippers the defensive anchor they have needed at center.
Still, there is no sign that the situation is moving quickly. The lack of updates from Leonard or the Clippers on extension negotiations leaves the door open to speculation, and the absence of a fresh turn in the Aspiration case means nothing has yet forced a decision. For now, the Pistons are simply one more team with the resources to ask the question: if Leonard becomes available, how far would they go?
