An image of Phil Gould meeting Sam Verrills during Magic Round set off a chain reaction that the Gold Coast Titans did not see coming. What began as a social media snap has now fed into talk of a possible player swap with the Bulldogs, with the Titans open to dealing Verrills and receiving centre Bronson Xerri.
The meeting landed at a sensitive moment for Verrills, who had already been told he would not be offered a contract extension by the Titans. It also raised eyebrows because the picture circulated while the club was blindsided by the encounter, adding fuel to speculation that Gould was sounding out options around Brisbane rather than merely crossing paths with players.
Phil Gould addressed the photo on 100% Footy and brushed off the reaction, saying he must have had 12 or 14 meetings around Brisbane over the four days he was up there and that he met a lot of young players, parents and managers. He added that the person who took the picture was “a moron,” saying the photo had been taken by someone hiding behind a pole and sent to the papers. The comments only sharpened the attention around a meeting that has become part of the Bulldogs’ wider hunt for a hooker, a theme also tracked in recent reporting on the club’s search for reinforcements.
The Titans’ interest in a swap would send Xerri north in exchange for Verrills, even though the Bulldogs centre is contracted until the end of 2027. Xerri’s return to first grade in April came after a turbulent period earlier this year, when he had been tipped to leave Belmore before deciding to stay. He later said it had been tough, but that as long as the boys within the four walls and the staff knew his intentions, he was happy and wanted to do what was best for the team and the club. He also said whatever was reported was out of his control and that it was enough for the team to know his intentions.
That leaves the Titans weighing a move around a player who is already on the outer and a Bulldogs squad that has the leverage of a centre on a long contract. The timing matters because clubs are now positioning ahead of the next round of roster decisions, and every public hint of movement carries extra weight. For the Titans, the Verrills situation is no longer just about a contract call; it has become part of a bigger trade conversation.
Gould’s Brisbane trip is unlikely to quiet the noise either. His account of the weekend was that he was simply moving through a busy schedule of meetings, but the image with Verrills turned routine roster contact into a talking point. For the Bulldogs, the hooker search remains live, and for the Titans, the question is whether a swap that was never supposed to be public can still become practical.
Elsewhere, the Panthers are trying to hold together another roster puzzle. Peter Wallace has been confirmed as Ivan Cleary’s successor and the club’s head coach for 2028, while Liam Martin has already told his agent Allan Gainey that he would love to play under Wallace. Martin is facing free agency on November 1 and said earlier this month that it was not out of the question and that he was definitely interested, adding that being part of something new and seeing how much the club loves football was incredible. Brian To’o, Nathan Cleary and Isaah Yeo are among the other Panthers stars off-contract at the end of 2027, a reminder that the pressure around elite lists does not stop at one image or one meeting.
