Blake Shelton used the ACM Awards stage to salute Kenny Rogers and Don Schlitz with a performance of The Gambler, turning one of country music’s most familiar songs into a tribute to two men whose work helped define it. Shelton performed the song during the broadcast and thanked Amazon as the show aired on Prime Video and Twitch.
The moment carried extra weight because the song was never just Rogers’ signature. Schlitz wrote The Gambler, which was recorded by Bobby Bare and Johnny Cash before Rogers took it to No. 1 on the US Hot Country Songs chart after his 1978 performance. Rogers died in March 2020, and Schlitz died last month at 73 in Nashville, where he had been a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry.
Shelton framed the tribute as a nod to country music history, saying, “That particular song is like two legends came together and made one of the most important pieces of music in country music history…I would say it’s in the top 10, at least it’s in my top 10 of all time.” He also said, “I always love it when these award shows take time to honor someone that we’ve lost.”
That fit the shape of this year’s ACM Awards, which were streamed instead of airing on traditional network television and, by the end of the night, had turned one of the most recognizable songs in country music into a memorial. Producers had worked to keep special appearances and surprises secret, and Shelton’s performance was one of the evening’s most closely held moments.
The tribute also underscored how much of country music still rests on the handoff between writer and singer. Schlitz created the song, Rogers made it a hit, and Shelton brought it back to the spotlight at an awards show built around that lineage. For a few minutes, the performance was less about nostalgia than simple record-keeping: the song still matters because the people who made it matter.
