Manchester United’s return to the UEFA Champions League has sharpened the club’s summer plans, with firm interest growing in Leicester City winger Jeremy Monga as senior recruitment figures step up contact with other clubs.
United secured qualification for next season’s competition after a 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford, moving to 64 points and 12 clear of sixth place with three games remaining. That place in Europe is expected to strengthen their position in the market and could add £80-100 million to their summer spending power.
Roundtable understands that Jason Wilcox met club officials from Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and another undisclosed Premier League club over the past week, with Academy Director Stephen Torpey present at the Leicester meeting. United’s interest in Monga, who is expected to leave Leicester this summer, sits alongside their view of another teenage talent at the club, midfielder Louis Page, who was born in 2008.
Leicester have become the clearest reference point in United’s youth scouting push, but they are not alone. Manchester City have also held talks with Leicester about Monga, leaving the teenager at the centre of a quiet tug-of-war between two of English football’s biggest clubs as the summer window approaches.
The move toward younger targets does not change the club’s broader recruitment brief. United still want proven Premier League-quality players, but the renewed Champions League status gives them more room to pursue prospects whose value may rise quickly if they develop as expected.
That wider planning is unfolding while uncertainty remains around senior roles inside the club. Michael Carrick said on Thursday afternoon, ahead of United’s trip to face Sunderland, that no talks had taken place about his long-term role. “Listen, clarity is important,” he said, adding that recent contact was only a matter of days old and that the focus remained on finishing the season strongly.
He has said the issue of his role will be sorted out at the end of the season. For now, United are ending the campaign with one eye on the table and another on the summer, where Monga has already become one of the names to watch.
