Jake Paul said during a recent livestream that he had $200 million for Canelo Alvarez, then pushed the idea of a blockbuster matchup that would put him across the ring from one of boxing’s biggest names. “Canelo, I have the $200 million for you, easy money. Jake vs Canelo, let’s get it done,” Paul said, adding, “This is the biggest fight in boxing.”
The comments came as Paul was still rebuilding his boxing career after a knockout loss to Anthony Joshua earlier this year. The loss left him trying to regain momentum at the highest level after a difficult stretch that also included a serious injury and a recovery period. For Paul, a fight with Alvarez would represent the biggest test of his career.
That is the fight Paul wants, but for now it remains speculation. Alvarez is a four-division world champion, and the size of the gap in experience between the two fighters has already raised questions about whether a sanctioning body would approve it. Those questions got louder after Mauricio Sulaiman said the WBC had not received a request for sanctioning.
Sulaiman also pointed to Paul’s resume, saying, “Jake Paul proved himself by fighting Mike Tyson and Anthony Joshua.” Even so, the WBC president’s comments underscored how far the matchup still is from becoming a real bout, no matter how loudly Paul markets it.
For now, the fight exists in the space between spectacle and possibility: a fighter still trying to prove he belongs at the top, and a champion whose name instantly turns any callout into a major event. If Jake Paul fights Canelo Alvarez, it will not just be because Paul asked for it on a livestream. It will be because the sport decided the leap was worth taking.
