Nicolle Caliari turned a slow start into her first UFC victory on Saturday, submitting Shauna Bannon by arm-triangle choke at 3:08 of round three in the preliminary-card opener at UFC Vegas 117 at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas.
The finish ended a back-and-forth fight that saw Caliari, who entered at 0-2 and was moving down to strawweight, seize the early edge with multiple throws and steady top control in the first round. She also worked a kimura before Bannon, who came in at 2-2 and was looking to bounce back from a loss to Sam Hughes, began to shift the momentum in the second.
Caliari stayed busy in the opening frame, landing her throws and spending much of the round in top position. Bannon had trouble building any rhythm as Caliari kept the action grounded and pressed the pace with submission attempts. The first round gave the impression that Caliari had found the cleaner grappling answers, even if the scoreboard pressure was still tied to her search for a first win in the promotion.
Bannon answered in round two. Caliari pushed her against the fence early, then grabbed a single leg and spun her around, but Bannon stayed upright. Caliari eventually got the bout to the mat and worked from guard while Bannon fired elbows off her back. Then Bannon reversed the position, got on top and threatened with a crucifix before moving to side control and dropping elbows of her own.
The third round opened with Bannon throwing a low kick, but Caliari quickly reasserted herself with a key takedown and settled into half-guard. Bannon carried swelling around her left eye as the round wore on, and Caliari used the position to set up the arm-triangle that ended the fight. The submission gave Caliari the result she had been chasing since entering the UFC, while Bannon was left with another setback after a hard-fought but costly opener.
For Caliari, the win matters immediately because it stops the early slide in her UFC run and gives her a foothold after two losses. For Bannon, the defeat deepens the pressure to respond after the loss to Hughes, especially in a division where small grappling mistakes can decide a fight in a matter of seconds.
