Rory McIlroy moved into a share of the lead with a birdie at the 13th hole as the third round of the 2026 US PGA Championship unfolded at Aronimink Golf Club. He was at -4 after making his sixth birdie of the day, with only one blemish on his card at the 4th hole, and he hit the turn in 32.
The leaderboard was crowded around him. Alex Smalley and Maverick McNealy were also at -4, while Xander Schauffele was one back at -3 and Jon Rahm reached that mark after birdies at 1 and 5. Aaron Rai made consecutive birdies at 2 and 3 to move to one off the lead, and Joaquin Niemann surged with birdies at 9, 10, 13 and 15 before a kick-in eagle at 16.
Justin Rose added a 65 to reach -2 and join the clubhouse lead with Kristoffer Reitan and Chris Kirk, while Brian Harman’s 66 left him at -1 overall. Taylor Pendrith was at +1 after a 67, and Padraig Harrington matched that 67 after a 69 on the previous day to sit level par for the week. Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion, remained at -2 after missing a birdie putt at the 1st hole.
The shape of the pga leaderboard 2026 told the story of a championship still refusing to sort itself out. The leaders included players still on the course and others already in the clubhouse, which left the top of the board split between live pressure and finished rounds. McIlroy was one of the big guns assembling near the lead, but with Scheffler, Schauffele, Rahm, Burns, Rose, Smalley and McNealy all within touching distance, the margin for error had already disappeared.
That is what gives the next stretch of the round its weight. Burns was building with four birdies in a row from the 13th through 16th, and any one of the contenders still on the course could redraw the board before the day ends. For now, Aronimink has the look of a major championship where the front of the field is less a line than a knot.
