Utk celebrated its Class of 2026 with three commencement ceremonies at McKenzie Arena, recognizing about 1,780 degree candidates who crossed the stage this spring. The graduates came from 73 Tennessee counties, 29 states and 19 countries, underscoring how far the university’s reach has stretched beyond Chattanooga.
The class included 368 first-generation students, 503 Pell scholarship recipients and 35 students who have served or are currently serving in the military. Chancellor thanked commencement marshals, volunteers, event staff, faculty and administrators for helping make the ceremonies meaningful and memorable on May 21, 2026.
Those numbers matter because commencement at Utk is now doing double duty: it is both a milestone for students and a public measure of who the university is serving. The mix of local, out-of-state and international graduates, along with the large share of first-generation and Pell recipients, shows a student body that is broadening in both geography and background.
The commencement figures were part of a wider campus update that also touched on visits around the university and other recognition items. One of those included the Mocs Wellness Initiative, which brings together physical therapy, nutrition and health coaching to support employee well-being while giving students hands-on experience in collaborative care. Early results showed strong participation, measurable health improvements and high satisfaction among participants. The update also congratulated UTC alum Cheyenne Higgs, who earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in December 2025.
The through line is simple: Utk is presenting itself not just as a place that awards degrees, but as a campus where academic success, service and wellness are tied together. With commencement complete, the clearest takeaway is that the university’s class of 2026 left with numbers behind it that reflect both reach and access.
