The Golden State Warriors are losing their top two assistants, with Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse both departing the franchise after the expiration of their contracts following this past season. Stotts, who spent two years as Steve Kerr's lead assistant and offensive coordinator, told Kerr late in the regular season that he did not intend to return.
Stotts said he is leaving on good terms and remains open to NBA head coaching opportunities. “I enjoyed my time with Steve, the staff and players,” he said. “My two years there were fulfilling. Nothing but well-wishes.”
Stackhouse also is leaving after a two-season run on Kerr's staff. He was hired in July 2024 to fill the vacancy left by Kenny Atkinson, who departed that summer for the Cleveland Cavaliers head job, and served as the Warriors' defensive coordinator. Stackhouse is pursuing head coaching opportunities elsewhere.
The exits deepen a coaching overhaul that was already underway. Chris DeMarco left in January for the New York Liberty head coaching job, and Kris Weems is expected to remain on a staff that will otherwise be rebuilt in the lead roles. The Warriors are in the early stages of searching for replacements for Stotts and Stackhouse, with former New Orleans Pelicans head coach Willie Green among the candidates.
Green began his NBA coaching career with the Warriors in 2016 and spent three seasons as an assistant on Kerr's staff, making him a familiar option as Golden State tries to reset around a team that won only 37 games last season and missed the playoffs through the play-in bracket. Kerr agreed to return on a two-year deal last week, and management has already made clear in talks with him after the season that changes were needed.
For a franchise still trying to chase another title around Steph Curry, the next hires matter almost as much as the roster work to come. Golden State is not just replacing two assistants; it is remaking the structure around Kerr at a moment when the room has already been told that the old setup was not enough.
