Police found two children dead in a burned vehicle early Friday behind a warehouse on San Antonio’s West Side and arrested their mother at the scene on capital murder charges. Officers said the fire was reported just before 5 a.m. in the 500 block of Richland Hills Drive near Potranco Road after a passerby spotted the vehicle burning and called 911.

The woman arrested was identified as , 34, of Edinburg. Assistant Chief said the children are believed to be 5 and 7 years old, though the will determine their identities. Police said evidence from surveillance video, the scene and Vidal’s own statements led investigators to conclude she was responsible for the deaths. Salame said during a Friday morning briefing that officers first believed there were three young children in the car, then later confirmed there were only two.

Salame said the case has shaken investigators and the wider city. “It’s difficult for our entire community to have to deal with this,” he said, adding that “it’s tragic on so many angles; it’s hard for us to really put into words how this impacts all of our community.” He also said mental health issues may have played a role, though police did not say what statements Vidal made or what specific evidence led them to that conclusion.

The fire itself remains under investigation by arson investigators. said its local office is looking into the case because it happened in Bexar County. A family member interviewed by local television said Vidal had been temporarily living in San Antonio, and database checks in Bexar County and Hidalgo County found no previous criminal record for her.

The details now point to a homicide case built quickly from a chaotic scene, but two questions still carry the most weight: the exact identities of the children and what set the fire in motion. The medical examiner will answer the first. Arson investigators are expected to push hardest on the second.
