Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! will begin streaming on HBO Max on Friday, May 22, two months after its theatrical debut. The film will then air on the HBO cable channel on Saturday, May 23 at 8:00 p.m. ET, and an American Sign Language version will stream exclusively on HBO Max the same day.

The release gives the film a second life after a disappointing run in theaters. The Bride! grossed $24 million worldwide, well below its reported $80 million to $90 million budget, and is expected to leave Warner Bros. with a loss of about $80 million to $90 million after marketing costs. That turnaround matters because the film arrives on streaming with the kind of financial overhang that can shadow a title long after opening weekend has passed.

Gyllenhaal wrote and directed the film, which is inspired by Bride of Frankenstein, the 1935 classic that helped shape the project’s look and premise. Set in 1930s Chicago, The Bride! follows Christian Bale as Frank, a lonely man who travels to the city seeking a brilliant scientist who can build him a companion. Instead, the scientist reanimates a murdered young woman, played by Jessie Buckley. The cast also includes Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, Penélope Cruz, John Magaro, Matthew Maher, Zlatko Burić, Jeannie Berlin, Julianne Hough and Louis Cancelmi.

The film’s move to streaming comes with the mixed reception already baked in. The Bride! has a 57% Rotten Tomatoes score and a 70% audience score, a split that reflects a movie that found some supporters but failed to break out with critics or ticket buyers. For Warner Bros., the math is plain: a movie with prestige names, a familiar gothic source and a big budget did not deliver at the box office, and the streaming rollout now becomes the clearest chance for a wider audience to decide whether Gyllenhaal’s take on the story was missed in theaters or simply did not connect.

For viewers, the next step is immediate: The Bride! lands on HBO Max on May 22, reaches HBO the following night, and adds an ASL version at the same time. The question is no longer whether the film can rescue its theatrical run. It is whether streaming gives Maggie Gyllenhaal's latest feature the audience that movie houses did not.
