Toyota is moving closer to a compact pickup, with executives now saying a small truck is coming and that the question is no longer whether it will happen. Cooper Ericksen said, "It's not a matter of 'if' at this point," and added, "We're dedicated to it. We're going to figure out how to make it work."
That marks a sharper public commitment than the company has made before. Toyota has been contemplating a compact-sized pickup for a while, and Ericksen's comments followed a 2023 report that a Corolla-based pickup was under consideration for the company's Mississippi assembly plant, along with another compact model.
Tetsuo "Ted" Ogawa also said there is definitely demand for a compact-sized truck. He described a RAV4-based pickup as an opportunity for Toyota and said dealers are waiting, though, as he put it, "but it takes time."
The timing matters because the compact-truck idea is no longer just an internal sketch. Toyota already sells the Tacoma and Tundra, both body-on-frame trucks built for buyers who tow, haul or go off-road. Those models have strengths, but they are also more truck than many shoppers need and typically come with higher prices. A smaller pickup would let Toyota chase buyers who want utility without the size or cost of the larger nameplates, and it would put the company in closer reach of the Ford Maverick segment.
The sixth-generation RAV4 is the clearest clue to how Toyota could do it. The SUV uses the company's modular TNGA-K architecture and is offered only with gas-electric powertrains, including a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid with up to 236 horsepower and a 324 hp plug-in hybrid setup. That makes it a plausible base for a compact pickup without forcing Toyota to start from scratch.
For now, the message from Toyota is not that a truck is being rushed out the door. It is that the company sees the market, sees the dealer interest and is working through the engineering and manufacturing puzzle. The more important question now is not whether Toyota wants a small pickup, but how soon it can turn that intent into a vehicle that fits the slot it is chasing.
