Marcos Senesi will leave Bournemouth when his contract expires in the summer, ending a four-year stay at the club after he joined from Feyenoord in 2022.
The Argentina defender, who has just turned 29, has been free to speak to European clubs about a free transfer since 1 January and is also exploring options to stay in England's top flight. Bournemouth offered him a new contract, but he will depart Vitality Stadium at the end of the season.
Senesi confirmed the decision in remarks that reflected both pride and unfinished business. “I'm proud of everything we achieved over the last four years,” he said. “I will look back at my time here with fond memories.” He added: “For now, there are still two big games left of the season and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together.”
His exit comes with Bournemouth in sixth place in the Premier League, a position that would secure their highest-ever finish in the division. The club need two more points to set a record points tally and remain on course for European qualification, with the Europa League or Conference League the most likely outcomes, though they still have hopes of reaching the Champions League.
Senesi’s future is less clear. He has spoken to multiple clubs, and while Tottenham, Barcelona and Juventus have been linked with him, sources at Chelsea have played down any suggestion they will move for him this summer. A club signing him would avoid a transfer fee, but would still need to meet substantial personal terms, a factor that has already shaped his next move.
That same push for a stronger contract previously led Senesi to leave Bournemouth after three offers, and it now leaves the club facing the loss of a regular defender just as the season reaches its most decisive stretch. Andoni Iraola will also leave Bournemouth at the end of the season, adding another change to a team that has spent much of the campaign above expectations.
