Southampton could be kicked out of the playoffs and the league 1 play off final may yet be delayed after the English Football League said the club’s disciplinary case will be heard by Tuesday 19 May. The warning landed on Thursday, just four days before the scheduled final at Wembley, and left supporters waiting on whether the fixture will go ahead as planned.
The EFL charged Southampton with allegedly spying on Middlesbrough’s training within 72 hours of their semi-final first-leg meeting and also accused the club of not acting with the utmost good faith. Southampton confirmed before Tuesday’s second leg that they had opened an internal review into the misconduct allegations, then went on to beat Middlesbrough on Tuesday night. The independent disciplinary commission will hear the case before the final, and the league said it will publish its decision as soon as possible after considering the submissions and evidence.
The stakes are immediate because Hull are already guaranteed a place in the Wembley showpiece and were due to share ticket-sale information with Southampton on Thursday. The EFL said supporters should be aware that the outcome may still lead to changes to the fixture, and it has contingency plans in place, including any appeal process if required. Hull believe the uncertainty raises questions about the sporting integrity of the competition, while Middlesbrough are preparing to return to training on Monday.
This is no longer a routine disciplinary matter tucked away from the spotlight. If Southampton are found guilty, the consequences could reach beyond the club itself and into the shape of the playoff bracket, with Middlesbrough potentially reinstated and Hull forced to adjust preparations at short notice.
The timing is awkward for the wider football calendar too. The League One playoff final is set for 24 May, the League Two final follows on 25 May, the rugby league Challenge Cup final is scheduled for 30 May and the women’s FA Cup final on 31 May, leaving limited room for movement at Wembley and little margin for error if the commission changes the picture.
