The swimming pool at North Berwick Sports Centre has turned green after a failure in the plant equipment, but the operator says the water is still very safe to use.

Enjoy Leisure said the colour change was caused by a breakdown in plant equipment affecting the component that helps keep the water clear. The company, which runs sports centres in the county on behalf of East Lothian Council, said the pool had appeared green in recent months. It added that it takes safety extremely seriously and carries out regular independent external testing to confirm water quality is maintained to a high standard.

Bill Axon said the pool is maintained within industry guidance and parameters at all times, even with the equipment fault. “Due to a breakdown in plant equipment affecting the component that aids water clarity, our highly trained pool-plant operators have continued, as always, to ensure the pool is maintained within industry guidance and parameters at all times,” he said.

Axon also said: “We want to reassure our visitors that the swimming pool water is regularly tested and remains very safe to use.”

Enjoy Leisure has been working with the council, which oversees the building’s maintenance, to secure a repair unit, with the fix due to be carried out in the coming weeks. Delays were caused by supply-chain difficulties, leaving the pool visibly green for longer than expected while the maintenance issue was sorted out.

The episode leaves North Berwick with an unusual but limited problem: a pool that looks off-colour but, by the operator’s account, remains open and safe while repairs are lined up. For swimmers, the next key moment is not the water’s appearance but whether the promised repair goes ahead in the coming weeks and restores the pool’s clarity.
