Jj Gabriel has been named the inaugural Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season after a blistering campaign for Manchester United that has put the 15-year-old firmly on the club’s radar. Gabriel has scored 23 goals in 23 Under-18 Premier League appearances this season and added three more in five FA Youth Cup matches, a return that has made him one of the standout young players in England.
The award lands just as United prepare to meet Manchester City in the 2026 FA Youth Cup final on Thursday, a match that gives the club another chance to show how much of its future talent is already pushing through. Gabriel, who will not turn 16 until October, has already trained with United’s senior squad on a number of occasions this season, and Darren Fletcher said this week that he is “more than capable” of going on preseason. Fletcher added that United want him to go up there and thrive, but stressed the need to choose the right moment and make sure the player understands why the step is being taken.
That balance is the point. Gabriel has been playing against opponents up to three years older than him this season, and United will have to decide how far to push him when the senior group heads out for a preseason tour that is expected to be closer to home than usual. The trip will include Finland, Norway, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland, giving the club a four-country run before the new campaign starts.
United know the appeal of a fast track. Their history includes FA Youth Cup winners who went on to become first-team stars, and Gabriel’s progress already has the feel of a player moving faster than the age grade around him. The club’s caution is obvious, though. Fletcher said once a young player is thrown in, he is judged quickly, rightly or wrongly, and that means the next step matters as much as the last one. Thursday’s final, the preseason decision and Gabriel’s own age are all part of the same question now: how much more can United give him before the pressure arrives for good?
