Katy Perry had a joke ready when Josh Groban’s engagement made its way back to her feed. On May 12, Perry posted a social media video dressed in a white robe, pouring herself a drink and pretending to cry as she took a sip, with the engagement announcement visible behind her as a screenshot of a news article.
She captioned the post, “Congrats 🥂,” and the video was shared on Facebook and Instagram as a collaboration with Drink De Soi, the nonalcoholic beverage line she cofounded. Groban had revealed in an April 21 post that he proposed to English theater actress Natalie McQueen during an outing at Disneyland.
The reaction landed because Perry and Groban go back to the late 2000s, when they were an item. She later said in 2017 that “The One That Got Away” was about that short-lived relationship, and the song became one of her biggest hits, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and selling 5 million copies.
Perry’s post also fit neatly into the way she has been discussing her personal life in public for years. She was married to English comedian and actor Russell Brand from 2010 to 2012, later dated rock singer John Mayer and English actor Orlando Bloom, and separated from Bloom in 2025 after a nine-year romance. Perry and Bloom share 5-year-old daughter Daisy, and she is now dating former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
That history gave the joke extra bite, but it also showed how neatly Perry can turn old headlines into fresh promotion. The engagement reaction video appeared as a collaboration post with Drink De Soi, tying the moment to the brand she co-founded while keeping the tone light. Perry and Trudeau were also seen together at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April, adding another layer to a public life that continues to draw attention even when she is reacting to someone else’s news.
For Perry, the answer to the old song title seems to be this: Groban was, for a time, the one that got away, but on May 12 she treated his engagement less like a wound and more like a punchline.
