The Kansas City Chiefs will open their prime-time season at home against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14, when the teams meet in the NFL’s first Monday Night Football game of 2026. The league said the game will kick off at 8:15 p.m. ET on ABC and.
The matchup gives Kansas City an early chance to answer a familiar rival after Denver swept the Chiefs in 2025, winning both meetings and extending its run to three straight victories in the series. The Broncos also took four of the last five against the Chiefs, a sharp turn after Kansas City controlled the AFC West for nine straight seasons before Denver won the division last year.
For the Chiefs, the assignment lands at a tense moment. Patrick Mahomes missed two losses last season, including a Week 17 meeting after suffering a torn ACL, and had knee surgery in the middle of December. In January, he said, “I wanna be ready for Week 1,” and added, “That’s my goal … to play in that Week 1 (game) and have no restrictions.”
Mahomes’ health is central because Kansas City finished 6-11 last season and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014. The Chiefs’ stumble came after years of regular-season dominance, and the return to a Monday night spotlight against Denver now doubles as a checkpoint on whether the franchise can rebound quickly from its worst season in more than a decade.
Denver arrives with momentum of its own. The Broncos entered 2026 after a 14-3 season and an AFC West title under Sean Payton, who became head coach in 2023, and they are 3-0 on Monday Night Football since he took over. They also beat the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3 last season on Monday night before eventually falling to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.
The NFL’s choice of this matchup fits a broader opening week built around high-profile division games. The league said the Dallas Cowboys will face the New York Giants in the first Sunday Night Football game of 2026, one day before announcing the Chiefs-Broncos opener. It also has the Buffalo Bills playing the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football on Sept. 17 in Week 2.
One notable wrinkle is what the league did not schedule. Kansas City had been under consideration for a game against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, but the NFL picked the San Francisco 49ers as the Rams’ opponent instead, reflecting Mahomes’ recovery timeline. The full schedule comes out Thursday, but the early lineup already puts the Chiefs’ 2026 season under the brightest possible lights.
