Derek Chisora wants the rematch, and the conversation around Deontay Wilder is moving quickly. Amer Abdallah, speaking for MF Pro, said Chisora called him a couple of weeks ago and demanded another fight after Wilder beat him by split decision last month at the O2 Arena.
Abdallah said Chisora was furious about Wilder’s postfight remarks that he had held back late in the bout and had been thinking of the veteran’s children when he chose not to push for a more damaging finish. That explanation did not soften Chisora, Abdallah said. It made him angrier, and he kept pressing for a second meeting.
“He called me a couple of weeks ago and he was perturbed, he was upset that Deontay said that he took it easy on him and sent him home to his family. He was livid. He kept saying ‘get me the rematch, get me the rematch’,” Abdallah said. Sky Sports also reported that Chisora’s wife had given him the green light to take part in a rematch with Wilder.
The result leaves Wilder in a stronger position than Chisora, but the rematch talk is being driven by the fallout from how the first fight ended. Wilder had wanted the win to push him toward another shot at the world heavyweight title, and the original bout had been billed as the American’s career finale. Chisora, meanwhile, had vowed before the fight that it would be his last.
Abdallah said he expected Wilder to accept a rematch proposal and suggested MF Pro would like to be involved if the fight can be made. “I think that Deontay Wilder would absolutely take the rematch and the great thing with Deontay is that he is back,” he said. “He is in a position now where he is back in the heavyweight picture.” He also said, “so I hope to be able to work some things out with Deontay and then if Derek wants to stay in the mix, possibly something with him also.”
That leaves both men in a familiar place: talking about what comes next after a fight that was supposed to close one chapter. Wilder got the decision, but his own words about easing off Chisora have kept the story alive, and the rematch now looks less like speculation than the next move that has to be answered.
