will return to Swangard Stadium for the first time in their MLS era on Wednesday, July 8, when they host in the first leg of the TELUS Canadian Championship quarterfinals. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT, and the venue in Burnaby will hold just over 5,000 for the match.

The game marks a rare homecoming for a club that played its first-team matches at Swangard for 24 years, from 1987 to 2010. The first match there came on June 7, 1987, when the Vancouver 86ers beat the Edmonton Brickmen 4-2. The last first-team game at the stadium ended in disappointment on October 17, 2010, when the Whitecaps lost in extra time to the Puerto Rico Islanders in the second leg of the USSF Division 2 Pro League semifinals.

Whitecaps sporting director said the club saw the matchup as a chance to add another chapter to the stadium’s history. With BC Place unavailable, he said the club looked at several options before deciding to “return to our roots” as it begins its title defense. Burnaby mayor welcomed the decision, saying the city was thrilled to bring the Whitecaps back to Swangard and noting the long history between the club and the stadium, including , who currently play there in MLS NEXT Pro.

The setting also gives the club a familiar stage for a competition it has owned in recent years. Whitecaps FC are chasing a fifth straight Voyageurs Cup title and a sixth overall, and they have already navigated a history of tight ties with Cavalry FC. The clubs have met in three different Canadian Championship series, with Vancouver advancing twice, including last year’s quarterfinal when the Whitecaps moved on on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate result.

Cavalry arrives with momentum after beating 3-1 in the preliminary round on Saturday. The return leg is set for Monday, July 13 at ATCO Field at Spruce Meadows in Foothills County, Alberta, with kickoff at 6:30 p.m. PT. The winner will face either or in the two-legged semifinals, with a place in the next step of the tournament and a route toward the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup still on the line.

Swangard has seen this competition before. Whitecaps FC played six Canadian Championship matches there from 2008 to 2010, and this one carries more than nostalgia. It is the first time the club’s MLS-era first team will step back onto a ground that once defined it, in front of a smaller crowd than modern league nights but in a setting that still carries the weight of the club’s past.
