A group of 36 medical professionals is warning that President Donald Trump is mentally unfit and should be removed from office “with the greatest urgency.” In a new statement, the experts said the 79-year-old president’s condition had deteriorated further since their 2024 warning and described his behavior as a rapidly worsening decline that is increasingly dangerous and untethered from reality.
The group, which includes neurologists, psychiatrists and other physicians with extensive experience diagnosing cognitive disorders, said Trump showed “marked deterioration in cognitive functioning” through disorganized and tangential speech, rambling digressions, factual confusions, unexplained sudden changes of course in strategic matters and episodes of apparent somnolence during critical public proceedings. They also said he displayed grandiose and delusional beliefs by posting imagery of himself as the pope and as a combat pilot on Truth Social, and showed severely impaired judgment and impulse control through reckless threats of violence and advocacy of lethal force against civilians.
Among the physicians named in the statement were Dr. Henry David Abraham, Dr. Bernard Beitman, Dr. William Bernet and Dr. Ravi Chandra. The warning landed as tensions remain high around the world, and it placed renewed attention on the issue the doctors say sits at the center of the danger: whether Trump’s actions, if they continue unchecked, could place decisions over more than 5,000 nuclear warheads in the hands of a leader they believe is unfit to hold power.
The doctors said they had not examined Trump face-to-face and instead based their judgment on his statements and behavior over the past year. That did not soften the language they used. They said his late-night posting pattern looked “seemingly compulsive, manic-like,” with as many as 150 posts in one night, and they pointed to his fixation on perceived enemies, persecutory ideas and prolonged attacks on specific individuals and institutions. The group also said Trump has repeatedly gone after the same Democratic foes, including Joe Biden, and remains fixated on the 2020 election years after it ended.
The statement is notable not only for its severity but for the remedy it urges. The experts called on the 25th Amendment to be invoked, saying the question is no longer whether Trump’s conduct is troubling but whether officials around him would be willing to remove the nuclear codes from his control. That is the alarm the doctors are sounding now: not a diagnosis made in private, but a public warning that they believe the country cannot afford to ignore.
