Diane Hutchinson died in Hollyoaks in scenes linked to Wednesday’s May 13 episode, ending a 16-year run for Alex Fletcher’s character and closing one of the soap’s most central storylines.
Diane, who had been a pivotal part of the Channel 4 soap for nearly two decades, was played by Fletcher, whose departure from Hollyoaks was confirmed earlier this year after 16 years on the show. Her final scenes come after Diane was diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer, following a second opinion that backed up the local Dee Valley doctors’ diagnosis. Tony resolved to stay by her side until the very end, while Diane tried chemotherapy to buy herself more time with him and the children before stopping treatment after reacting to the drugs and deciding she did not want the side effects to take over what remained of her life.
The episode lands with added weight because Diane told Nancy Osborne last month that she had only weeks left, and the family has spent those weeks trying to keep hold of ordinary moments. She had already recorded nursery rhymes for daughter Eva because she knew the end was approaching, and Tony and the kids later decided to bring her food upstairs.
