Hearts moved to within a draw of their first title in 66 years after beating Falkirk, while Celtic were forced to sweat until the last few seconds of added time before edging Motherwell 3-2 in a dramatic Scottish Premiership Saturday.
Frankie Kent and Cammy Devlin scored in the first half for Hearts, and Blair Spittal added the third as they took care of their side of the job. That leaves them needing only a draw against Celtic at Celtic Park on Saturday at 12:30 BST to secure the championship.
Celtic, meanwhile, kept the race alive in a match that swung back and forth at Fir Park. Motherwell went ahead through Elliot Watt, before Daizen Maeda levelled. Benjamin Nygren then thundered Celtic in front, only for Liam Gordon to equalise for Motherwell with five minutes to go.
In the last few seconds of added time, Celtic were handed a penalty and Kelechi Iheanacho converted it with his left foot. Tom English said it looked to him as though the contact came off the player’s head, adding that he needed to see it again, but called it a huge decision given the context of the season and said it would be a huge talking point.
The result at Fir Park matters because it kept Celtic alive before their title showdown with Hearts, but it does not change the position Hearts have created for themselves. They now control their fate in a season that has dragged on toward a finish line they can see clearly, with one point enough to end a 66-year wait.
There was more moving around the table elsewhere too. Dane Scarlett scored his first Hibernian goal at Ibrox, and Hibernian remain in the hunt for fourth place. The broader picture is simple enough: Hearts are one draw away from history, Celtic still have a chance to stop them, and the season now turns to Saturday afternoon in Glasgow.
